The Start-Up 1 day Intensive Screen Print Class – $200

A perfect intro for beginners or refresher for pros.

If you want to play serious print – this is it. This intro/refresher class will teach you the entire process of print: from buying the right screen, exposing your own graphic onto it, selecting and printing ink and finally setting it, ready for wear or sale.

WHO DOES IT – Everyone from designers wanting a new medium, mums creating textiles for homewares, bands making their own merchandise, students doing exhibition pieces, people starting new enterprises and 1000 other ideas that come up…

WHY DO IT – Walk in with your design, walk out with a new world of skill. From here, many of our students have started legitimate businesses doing their own art onto different mediums from posters to tea towels, there’s even a few that are now professionla screen printers that print for other businesses—it’s a legitimate canvas and application space for ideas.

As part of the new Arcade / Print Edition ethos of pushing all boundaries all the time …. we’re turning up the heat on serious courses this year.

What is well known around Sydney as the Arcade Start-Up Screen Print Class (known for it’s use of photographic (real) emulsion stencils, waterbased inks and exceptional strike rate of people with great experiences and also people actually moving onto print enterprises), is soon to be seen as the gateway to bigger and better things. We feel the content of the Start-Up Class is excellent and a great stepping stone to the next level.

Click here for full course description, dates and booking details, or read on for the next level….

The first of these extension courses is the Illustration for Multi-Colour Print 4 Week Intensive with Blair Sayer – this promises to be an epic course.

There will be a corresponding course in Photoshop and Illustrator for Multi-Colour Prints with Nic Bailey, as well as a Yardage Intensive with Steve Woods, and other smaller specialty subjects rotating around these.

The Start-Up is a pre-requisite for the production parts of these courses (taking part in the last 2 weeks), where you will make your prints and produce a commercial style run of that print.

All the way from art concept, nurtured and instructed by industry professionals, walking out he door at the end with a sound knowledge of industry practice, methodology and production.

This is the first of a program of what we want to be recognised as truly brilliant instruction leading to bigger and greater recognition for participants ad greater knowledge …. and a few ciders along the way and some quality ink.

How does a man leave the <del>glamourous</del> delicious life of being a baker and pastry chef to chase a dream he’s always known burned deep within? What kind of ardour is needed to strip away the marzipan, ditch the kitchen apron and don the printers’…apron? I wouldn’t know personally because I can’t cook toast, but Steve Woods from Arcade Screen Printing in Sydney does. Because he did it.

“After years of baking I wanted to solve this art thing within me so I put myself through Billy Blue.” Woods, a 30 year old bloke from Bathurst, says. After following his intuition and graduating from the college, armed with his fresh design chops, he started a studio called Brandzoo. The studio focused on design for surf stores, CD covers, fashion and design for documentaries, even scoring him a credit or two on a few docos that run regularly on Foxtel with AFI and TV Week Logie nominations. Mid way through what Steve refers to as “the fashion thing” he ended up buying Screenhaus – a studio that works on custom hand printing for textiles, fashion and furnishings. It was from this location and his love for working with other designers that Arcade Screen Printing, and along with it The Arcade Start-Up Print Classes and Arcade Print Club, was born.

Launched with “The Great Arcade T-shirt Party” of 2010, the shop has hosted a few talks and events since and now sees growth happening rather “organically”. Since then Steve and his team have taught over 200 people how to screen print, with the majority of students going on to join the shop’s own creative community “Arcade Print Club”. A few students even go on to start their own T-shirt labels. “It’s a pretty rewarding space to be working in and I just love teaching.” Steve says of the successes Arcade has had. He continues, “We start with enthusiastic people from all walks of life and they walk out after a day with us pumped, and more importantly, ready to print and explore more.”

There never seems to be a specific type of student, and that’s the unpretentious glory of Arcade. “We have architects printing beside stay at home mums and frustrated graphic designers with 500 designs in their heads and then we get people starting their own home wares ranges or printing their own labels for markets. Then we have people who literally just come for fun. The classes always sell out well ahead of time and it’s a really good social outlet.”

Steve describes the workshop as being “Pretty Radical… Our space itself is very old school screen printing – very real.” Located on Hutchison Street, St. Peters, Arcade takes part in the Ambient Street Party ‘In The Night garden’, put on every year for the Sydney Fringe Festival, which sees the studio covered wall to wall with works from local designers and artists of all sorts. Steve cites the importance of creative neighbours, noting “there are always exhibitions at Tortuga Studios, The Hutch and Index… It’s a pretty happening area with Mays Lane 50 metres away and the whole Newtown / Marrickville art thing very much alive and on the edge.”

So what exactly is involved in changing a career and printing a customised t-shirt? According to Steve Woods it’s, “A good idea, water based inks (so you can actually print at home and not swim in chemicals), attitude and a need to create something real.”

If you’re interested in screen-printing with Arcade you will find more info here. 2013 is set to be another busy year for Steve and his team with UNSW and USYD O’ Days on the hit list with on campus illustration talks warming the team up for their “Big Arcade Yardage for Tees Night” which will see them print 20m of yardage print live and then cutting and making 20 limited edition, once-only tees on the spot. “All with a cider in hand.”

Great markets we did 2 late 2012 as well as a fabric sale day in October …. lots of hand printed product sold by all.

It’s pretty awesome when we walk through different markets these days and see people we’ve taught and see where they’ve taken it too.

Our next stop is the Print Exhibition in June 2013 …. the biggest event so far on our calander …. and that’s saying something considering the year we just had.

Not quite sure where Bradley really came from but he sticks around …. he obviously likes the print shop or the area or the people ….

Bradley emerged from where he had been sleeping, in the back of Arcade Screen Printing. Although only 28, he looked much older due to a large, scruffy beard and mustache, and thinning hair. He generally wore his favorite striped shirt and coat wherever he went, no matter the weather; today was no exception.

Bradley’s past was something of a mystery; he was an odd character who rarely spoke to anyone – not so much unfriendly as aloof. He may have been able to have a more stable lifestyle, but to him nothing matched the appeal and allure of the art galleries and exhibits surrounding him. He frequented each one without fail, and in fact was becoming quite familiar as a frequent patron of the Newtown, Surry Hills style of alternative arts. However, due to his unfailing silence, those who saw him could only wonder what his story would reveal. Despite his aloofness, he gave every appearance of intelligent thought; each art piece he studied with due care, as though his dark eyes saw further mysteries and revelations than most people could.

It was not just art that held his interest. Despite his aloof nature, Bradley loved music, and he made frequent appearances at parties as well. Just the other night he had been to a party on Hutchinson Street; the music had him reminiscing fondly about some of the parties at Tortuga he had been to. He often thought that the music at Tortuga perfectly complemented his own designs – it enriched the experience to have such auditory accompaniment to visual wonders…. in particular the ‘Sample Minds’ …. but really just that wild unbridled spontaeous art form which they called live music …

Bradley was hardly the type to stick to one spot in the city, though; some of his favorite hangouts were in Newton and Enmore. He thought sometimes that there was no better city than Sydney to fully appreciate art and music … and … the trains. Bradley could go for hours on the city rail network just listening to people and their stories …. sure, each city had their own appeal, but there was something about the art galleries and alternative scene in the inner city here in particular that was unmatched in his experience. Bradley always thought that Newtown was the truest alternate scene in Australia …. and here he could mix it up … he didn’t have to choose …. he could be a gay architect that liked sculpture or a garbage collector that liked comics …. he could be whatever he wanted and go to whatever he wanted ….. street artists would hang with fine artists and he liked that.

In his younger days Bradley used to travel a lot before settling down in Marrickville; in fact, the last time he had left the city had been years ago, when he had visited his brother in Newcastle. His obsession with art had led him to explore the city quite a bit before he had left; but it had seemed sparce in comparison to Sydney but he wanted to go back to see if he was right.

Bradley wondered why his thoughts were resting on travelling today. He normally did not roam far from his circle of locations; he had his favorite locations for art, and was content to not stray from them. In fact, while he had been thinking he had been absent-mindedly walking over to May’s Lane, one of his favorite locations when it came to street art. There was no one painting today that he knew about or that would surely be his destination. Instead he spent his time admiring what had developed since the last time he had been here; even some pieces that were still in progress. Street art was one of Bradley’s favorite forms of art; it always amazed him how it could be used to evoke certain feelings and emotions and yet remain a different experience for each person. Further, its placement could be overt or covert; but either way it was a constant reminder of the ubiquitous nature of art and the fact that art did not exist merely in exhibitions, but in everyone’s daily life as well.

But today, even street art could not hold his interest for long. In a sudden burst of restlessness, he went to the station at St. Peters, wondering where he could hitch a ride to. He hoped this would be the spur to shake off the miasma of ennui he had been feeling. Heading for the city circle he was chasing rumours of a backpacker artist painting streetscapes near Central.

Bradley had just about given up hope on the rumors when he stopped by a corner and saw someone seated there, painting furiously on an easel. Painting wasn’t Bradley’s favorite form of art; he acknowledged its merits, but often felt that there was only so much you could do with paint and paper. And seeing some of the results from people with artistic aspirations could be physically painful – not that there was any way they would believe they needed improvement. But as Bradley stepped closer and examined the painting, what he saw left him breathless. The painter was painting not only the scene on the street, quickly and accurately capturing the various people in motion, but he was also painting in the slightest hints of other figures present and other images of the shop fronts – as if he was not only painting what did exist, but what had existed and what would exist in the future. Bradley was held spellbound as the painter’s brush moved faster and faster, each movement bringing to life an aspect of the street that brought added depth to the picture. When he was finally finished, Bradley realized with a start that he had been watching for over an hour. He knew, without a doubt, that what he had seen today had irrevocably changed his idea of paintings; and even better, he had a new favorite artist.

On contemplation of the day – he headed for the bottleshop to pick up a Cab Sav on his way to the railway tunnel …. the driest spot on a rainy afternoon.

I was first introduced to Bradley by my friend Mike. Mike said he saw him at Semi Permanent today.

This shot was taken on the way to Newcastle …. I’m not sure why.
